Progreso, Yucatán — Damon "N," a 43-year-old U.S. citizen, was formally charged with aggravated femicide in the death of his 71-year-old mother, Linda "N," during a hearing held Friday at the Progreso Oral Justice Center. The Third Control Judge ruled that the defendant will remain in preventive detention pending trial due to the severity of the crime and the high risk he poses.

The Yucatán Attorney General's Office presented evidence linking Damon to the crime, which occurred on April 16 in the Chicxulub Puerto district. According to case file 44/2025, the defendant allegedly beat his mother before strangling her with a rope. The State Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) confirmed mechanical asphyxiation by strangulation as the cause of death.

Prosecutors sought immediate pretrial detention, which the judge granted under the principle of prisión preventiva oficiosa (mandatory preventive custody). However, Damon requested additional time to prepare his defense, prompting the court to schedule a follow-up hearing for Tuesday, April 30, to determine whether he will be formally indicted.

Background of the Case

The incident has drawn significant attention due to the familial relationship between the accused and the victim, as well as Damon’s foreign nationality. Authorities have not disclosed further details about potential motives or circumstances leading to the alleged crime.

The case remains under investigation by Yucatán prosecutors, who are expected to present additional evidence at the upcoming hearing.
