Mérida, Yucatán — The Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CICY) is actively promoting traditional medicine, revaluing native foods, and developing sustainable water treatment technologies, according to its director general, Maira Segura Campos.

Research in Traditional Medicine and Bioactive Compounds

Segura Campos stated that CICY is studying metabolites and bioactive compounds that could contribute to the prevention or treatment of diseases such as cancer, hypertension, and metabolic disorders. This research is conducted through biotechnology while respecting ancestral knowledge.

Climate-Resistant Coconut and Habanero Pepper

One of CICY’s key initiatives focuses on the management and revaluation of traditional foods like coconut and habanero pepper. "We are developing varieties resistant to climate change and diseases, which we make available to the state," Segura Campos explained. She emphasized the importance of aligning scientific research with the social and environmental needs of the region.

Patented Eco-Friendly Water Treatment Technology

In the field of water sanitation, CICY has developed a patented technology that treats wastewater without chemicals. The system is entirely natural and sustainable, designed to minimize environmental impact. "It is a green mechanism for waste management; it does not use polluting substances and seeks to provide a real solution for water sanitation in communities," Segura Campos highlighted.

The institution continues to bridge scientific innovation with practical applications to address pressing regional challenges.
