A family in Chetumal, Mexico, underwent a distressing ordeal when the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) clinic delayed the handover of their deceased infant's body. The baby girl had allegedly died due to medical negligence, and the family faced further hurdles before they could lay her to rest.
The family had to endure nearly four days of anguish before they could finally receive the body of the newborn. The baby girl was taken to the “Campos del Recuerdo” cemetery for burial as soon as the family was able to arrange it.
The ordeal began when 18-year-old Esmeralda sought medical help at the IMSS clinic due to pain. The medical staff diagnosed her with a threatened miscarriage and proceeded to remove the baby, who was five months gestation. The family was not fully informed about the situation until they were told that the newborn had died.
When the family came to collect the baby's body, the hospital staff were unable to locate it. The grandmother, who had come to identify the body, was shown only a bag where the infant was supposedly kept. The family was later informed that the body had been mistakenly transported to a clinic in Playa del Carmen and would have to be returned to Chetumal.
In a further twist, the hospital insisted that the family needed to arrange a funeral home before they could hand over the body. This left the family in a difficult position as they did not have the resources to cover the funeral expenses. They appealed for help on social media, and thankfully, the public responded with support.
However, the family has raised concerns that the body they received may not be their deceased infant due to the condition it was in, which did not seem to align with the reported time of death.
