Playa del Carmen is set to welcome its First International Theater Festival, an event organized by the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts (IMCAS) and backed by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado. The festival will take place from March 17 to 23, bringing together local and international theater professionals for a week of performances and cultural exchange.
Santiago Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, director of IMCAS, emphasized the festival’s importance in fostering artistic development. “Our goal is to provide local artists and cultural managers with access to a seminar led by theater professionals, while also offering residents and visitors high-quality performances featuring national and international actors,” he stated.

To encourage community participation, an open call has been launched, inviting artists from Quintana Roo to submit their theater proposals. Those selected by a jury will have the opportunity to showcase their work at the festival. Performances will take place at the Escuela de Iniciación Artística in Bellavista and the Teatro de la Ciudad from March 20 to 23. “This festival is part of our commitment to bringing prosperity to the community through culture,” Martínez Cuéllar added. “Step by step, we want Playa del Carmen to be recognized as an international cultural destination.”
The First International Theater Festival of Playa del Carmen promises to be a landmark event, offering a unique platform for artists while enriching the city’s cultural landscape.
