Hugo Zuriel, also known as "The Twin", has been arrested in Cancún as part of a coordinated operation by Quintana Roo's security forces. Zuriel, who is linked to several serious crimes, was a high-priority target in the state. His arrest came after a judge issued an order for his apprehension, citing his potential involvement in premeditated murder, attempted murder, and extortion.
The General Prosecutor's Office of Quintana Roo (FGEQROO) credited the arrest to extensive intelligence work, both in the field and behind the scenes. Agents tracked down Zuriel in Supermanzana 514, a bustling area of the city, where he was reportedly found with substances believed to be narcotics. This operation was part of the "Criminal Atlas of the State" strategy, a system for identifying and tracking high-priority criminals.
Zuriel was on the Prosecutor's Office's priority target list, highlighting the severity of the crimes he is accused of. The operation involved officers from the FGEQROO, the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection, the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the National Guard, and the State Citizen Security Secretariat. These groups form the Benito Juarez 100 Day Institutional Task Force, a security initiative aimed at combating crime in the state.
Authorities have linked the arrest warrant for 'The Twin' to three specific incidents. The first involves a premeditated murder and two attempted murders in the Isla Blanca area of Isla Mujeres. The second incident relates to an extortion case in the same region. Lastly, Zuriel is suspected of involvement in the theft of 3 million pesos in the Jardines del Sur neighborhood of Cancún on October 31, 2024.
Following his arrest, Zuriel was handed over to the appropriate authorities to face legal proceedings. A judge will determine his legal status in the coming days, while investigations continue into his potential involvement in other crimes.
