Rare Sea Turtle Hatchlings Found in Cozumel

Newborn white sea turtle hatchlings on a beach in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — As part of the permanent beach cleaning and monitoring program at the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park, the birth of 86 white sea turtle hatchlings (Chelonia mydas) was recorded in an event that occurred on the eve of the New Year.

The discovery is particularly relevant due to its atypical nature, as it is not common to document sea turtle nests during this time of year.

Under normal conditions, the last hatchings on the island occur towards the end of November, so this event stands out for occurring outside the usual nesting period, coupled with the fact that with the drop in temperatures, nests tend to take longer to hatch.

The nest was detected during the cleaning and monitoring tours continuously carried out by staff from the Directorate of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), which allowed for timely follow-up of the hatching process and ensured that the hatchlings could safely reach the sea, thus reinforcing marine wildlife protection actions.

The director of CEA, Rafael Chacón, highlighted the importance of permanent monitoring and preventive work for the protection of marine species, even outside the regular season, which allows for timely responses to extraordinary events like this one.
