Cancún, Quintana Roo — A 67-year-old woman identified as Josefina “N” lost her life following a violent shooting attack in the Mirador neighborhood, also known as La Colina, in Cancún.
According to preliminary reports, on Tuesday night, two women were conversing in front of a residence when armed individuals traveling on a motorcycle opened fire against them. Both women were injured and were transported by relatives to the General Hospital, where Josefina “N”’s death was later confirmed. The second victim, aged 59, remains hospitalized under medical care.
Neighbors indicated that the attack could be related to alleged demands for “quotas” by criminal groups, a practice that has kept the area in a state of anxiety for weeks. Residents reported that, one day prior, they held a demonstration to demand greater security and permanent patrols, warning that the lack of vigilance facilitates the operation of extortionists.
Elements of the Quintana Roo Police cordoned off the area to allow for the work of experts from the State Attorney General's Office, while the Public Ministry and the Specialized Prosecutor's Office on Femicides opened an investigation file to clarify the crime.
Residents of Mirador, La Roca, and La Colina warned that they will continue to raise their voices until the authorities address their demands and halt the wave of violence linked to illegal collections, which they assert has intensified in recent months.
