Earthquake interrupts Mexico president’s press conference

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's morning press conference being interrupted by an earthquake alert

Mexico City — A 6.5 magnitude earthquake recorded on the morning of Friday, January 2 in the state of Guerrero interrupted the first morning press conference of the year by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, after the seismic alarm was activated during the meeting with media at the National Palace.

The alarm forced a momentary suspension of the morning press conference, prompting the president to ask attendees to calmly evacuate the venue without incident, following established safety protocols for this type of emergency.

The National Seismological Service (SSN) preliminarily reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5, occurred at 07:58 hours (8:58 in Cancún), and was located four kilometers southwest of San Marcos, Guerrero.

The seismic movement was perceptible in various regions of the country and triggered the activation of the Seismic Alarm, primarily in Mexico City.

In response to the event, the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) implemented corresponding protocols and stated that it maintains permanent communication with state and municipal authorities and the National Emergency Committee to conduct a preliminary assessment of possible damages.

After a few minutes of suspension, the conference resumed without major incidents. So far, authorities have not reported material damages or injured persons.

During the morning press conference, Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez managed to present positive figures on tourism performance in destinations such as Cancún, Riviera Maya, and Tulum, prior to the interruption caused by the earthquake.
