Cancún, Quintana Roo — Faced with the threat of losing up to 40% of its beaches and the growing environmental impact from tourism—an activity that generates more than 8% of global emissions—Quintana Roo is preparing for the 2nd Sustainability Forum 2025, a space for dialogue and action focused on finding concrete solutions for the sector's principal challenges.

During the presentation of the event, Patricia de la Peña, the forum's organizer, underscored the urgency of comprehensively addressing problems such as the degradation of beaches and dunes, the accumulation of waste, the use of non-renewable energy, and informality in the tourism economy.

In this sense, she emphasized that collaboration between hoteliers, authorities, and suppliers is essential for implementing effective and sustainable strategies.

Among the priority actions highlighted are the recovery of dunes and coastal vegetation, which are fundamental for regenerating beaches; the reduction of plastics and solid waste through zero-waste and composting initiatives; and environmental training for staff and suppliers, with the objective of improving operational practices throughout the tourism value chain.

The forum will also address key topics such as the conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems, the application of the circular economy to tourism, and the promotion of business leadership with a sustainable focus. The goal is for all involved sectors to develop and implement policies and strategies with follow-up indicators that ensure measurable results and a real impact on the destination.

Furthermore, the forum will seek to strengthen the participation of the local community and the tourists themselves, promoting a culture of shared responsibility in the protection of the natural environment.

With these actions, the forum aspires to establish itself as a strategic platform to turn Quintana Roo into a model of more resilient, conscious, and environmentally responsible tourism, capable of confronting the challenges of the present and future.
