Mérida, Yucatán — The Yucatán State Government has introduced the "Conociendo Yucatán" (Discovering Yucatán) campaign, offering seven curated travel routes designed to showcase the region’s natural and cultural heritage this summer. The initiative, led by the Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), aims to encourage local residents to explore the state’s diverse attractions while fostering regional pride and sustainable tourism.

Promoting Local Tourism and Cultural Pride

Dario Flota Ocampo, head of Sefotur, emphasized that the campaign seeks to strengthen residents' sense of belonging and appreciation for Yucatán while promoting responsible and accessible tourism. The program is tailored for weekend getaways, providing ideal itineraries for families, couples, and groups of friends.

The campaign debuts with seven distinct tourist routes spanning various regions of Yucatán, along with a special museum-focused route in Mérida. Each itinerary is structured as a two-day excursion, allowing travelers to customize their experience by incorporating nearby points of interest.

"These routes blend well-known attractions with hidden gems, diversifying tourism offerings and directly benefiting local communities and service providers," Flota Ocampo stated during the campaign’s presentation alongside Valladolid Mayor Homero Novelo Burgos.

The proposed routes include:

  1. Río Lagartos – A journey through coastal wetlands and flamingo habitats.
  2. El Cuyo – A serene beach destination with unspoiled natural beauty.
  3. Sur Mágico – A tour of southern Yucatán’s cultural and historical landmarks.
  4. Izamal – The "Yellow City," famed for its colonial architecture and Mayan heritage.
  5. Celestún – A biodiverse haven known for its flamingo reserves and mangroves.
  6. Valladolid Mágico – A deep dive into Valladolid’s colonial charm and cenotes.
  7. Mérida Museums – A curated exploration of the capital’s cultural institutions.

Each route highlights regional cuisine, lodging options, and activities, emphasizing Yucatán’s archaeological, natural, and cultural wealth. Full details are available on the campaign’s microsite: https://yucatan.travel/conociendo-yucatan.

Future Expansion and Strategic Goals

In a later phase, additional routes will be introduced with Valladolid as a starting point, catering to the significant number of visitors from Quintana Roo. The campaign aligns with Yucatán’s Sectoral Tourism Development Plan, which prioritizes respect for Maya culture, community-based tourism, and unique travel experiences to benefit families across the state’s municipalities.

The "Conociendo Yucatán" initiative underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism while offering residents and visitors alike an opportunity to rediscover the region’s unparalleled heritage.
