Yucatán, Mexico — The State Government reinforced the protection of sea turtles at the close of the 2025 season, with more than 375,000 hatchlings released across the hawksbill, white, and loggerhead species. These actions were carried out at the sea turtle camp in Dzilam de Bravo through the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS), and included cleanup activities, maintenance, and the training of new volunteers.

Environmental Education and Volunteering

During the season, workshops were conducted on species identification, responsible nest management, and protocols for sightings. The head of the Department of Environmental Conservation, Jorge Novelo López, recognized the commitment of the volunteers, highlighting their role in coastal conservation.

Volunteer Leny Cetz Aké emphasized the importance of not interfering with the egg-laying process and allowing the turtles to return to the sea naturally. Another volunteer, Roberto Eustaquio Cetz Jiménez, stated that each turtle "represents life and hope for future generations."

2025 Conservation Results

Yucatán is home to 11 sea turtle camps, three of which are operated directly by the SDS in Sisal, Chabihau-Santa Clara, and Dzilam de Bravo. During the 2025 season, the following was recorded:

  • 3,033 hawksbill turtle nests (192,682 hatchlings)
  • 3,053 white turtle nests (183,180 hatchlings)
  • 1 loggerhead turtle nest (70 hatchlings)

Tortuguín Hotline and Citizen Participation

The SDS reminded the public that the Tortuguín Hotline (999 502 7825) is active 24/7 for reporting sightings or risks. Furthermore, it invited citizens to join in the care of these species, which symbolize identity, balance, and marine life for Yucatán.
