Chuburná Puerto, Yucatan — Local police are urging families and visitors to avoid swimming near the Chuburná Puerto inlet due to dangerous currents that can be hazardous even when the sea appears calm.

In recent days, the inlet has experienced low tide conditions that make the water look tranquil and attractive, but this does not reduce the risk. Despite warnings, dozens of visitors ignore the alerts and enter the water when patrols aren’t watching, putting their lives in danger.

According to Omar de la Cruz Herrera Cocom, head of the Progreso Municipal Police, officers have been monitoring bathers and asking them to leave when spotted in the water. While visitors comply initially, patrols often find the same people and others returning to the area during subsequent rounds, with some doubting the actual danger.

Herrera Cocom emphasized that the risk in this area is well-documented, recalling that in 2018, a woman and her two daughters were swept away by the current but were rescued. He also mentioned that same year, a vehicle driven by an intoxicated person fell into the inlet and was carried away, demonstrating the water’s force.

Following these incidents, authorities installed signs prohibiting swimming, as the area serves as an entry point for fishing vessels to the sheltered port. Herrera Cocom added that municipal and state authorities will increase weekend patrols as part of security measures and continue urging visitors to stay out of the inlet. He noted the site is intended only for activities like fishing, with restrictions aimed at preventing accidents.
