Tulum, Quintana Roo — An 18-year-old construction worker from Ocosingo, Chiapas, was injured after suffering an electric shock while working at a construction site located in the Tumben Ka neighborhood of this city.
According to testimonies from neighbors, the young man was placing a tarp on the third level of the building when, upon approaching a pole with high-tension power lines, he was struck by the electric current. Despite the risk, he did not fall into the void and managed to stay in place until receiving assistance, which prevented fatal consequences.
Paramedics arrived at the site to provide prehospital care and subsequently transported him immediately to a hospital in Playa del Carmen for medical evaluation. State Police officers and Civil Protection personnel also arrived at the location and proceeded to shut down the construction site as a preventive measure.
The authorities reported that an investigation will be initiated to determine responsibilities, as the worker did not have the necessary safety measures to carry out his tasks, such as a helmet, gloves, and personal protective equipment, especially considering that he was performing work at height and near electrical installations.
