Tulum, Mexico — A construction worker narrowly escaped death on Monday following a serious accident at kilometer 154 of the federal highway between Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, when an out-of-control pickup truck crashed into the vehicle in which he was traveling with two coworkers.
The incident occurred while the workers, who are from Nicolás Bravo, were repairing a tire on a trailer parked on the side of the road. One of them was maneuvering to flag the area, while another remained inside the car, a white Nissan Tsuru parked on the shoulder.
Suddenly, a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck traveling southbound lost control and slammed directly into the Tsuru, passing within inches of one of the workers, who recounted that he felt "the wind from the impact" before the crash.
The collision left both vehicles with considerable damage; the Tacoma ended up off the road with its airbags deployed. Despite the violence of the accident, no injuries were reported. The driver of the pickup truck, who emerged unscathed, was detained by the authorities. He indicated that his insurance company would cover the material damages.
Following the forensic investigation, the vehicles were towed to the impound lot.
The workers, employed on projects for the municipality of Puerto Aventuras, were returning to their homes when the accident occurred.
"I felt that my time had come to say goodbye to this world," said one of them, still in a state of shock.
