Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A woman has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison for the crime of attempted qualified homicide, following events that occurred in Playa del Carmen in February 2021, according to the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
What Did the Judicial Authority Decide?
After evaluating the evidence presented by the State Attorney General’s Office through the Specialized Prosecution Unit for Trials, a Trial Judge issued a guilty verdict against Onésima Soto Calixto.
The judicial authority determined her full criminal responsibility for the armed attack committed against a man, whose identity remains confidential, according to the Quintana Roo FGE.
How Did the Events Occur?
According to the investigation file, the crime occurred on February 5, 2021. The victim was traveling in a Jeep-type truck toward the Santa Cecilia neighborhood on the Cancún-Playa del Carmen federal highway.
Upon reaching the area of a ranch at kilometer 307, the now-sentenced woman intercepted the vehicle and aimed at the driver with a long single-barrel shotgun.
Subsequently, she fired several shots, one of which injured the victim in the left ear. The affected individual requested assistance through the 911 emergency number after detecting firearm impacts on his vehicle, the Attorney General’s Office reported.
Why Was the Sentence Issued?
After analyzing the evidence provided by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the judge concluded that this evidence sufficiently proved Onésima Soto Calixto’s responsibility for the alleged acts.
The judicial resolution considered the seriousness of the conduct and the risk generated to the victim’s integrity, resulting in a prison sentence of 16 years and eight months, in addition to payment of a fine of 89,690 pesos, detailed the Quintana Roo FGE.
