Merida, Yucatan — A woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempting to smuggle two Guatemalan children out of Mexico using fake birth certificates that falsely identified them as her own children.

Federal prosecutors obtained the conviction against Guadalupe “N” after she tried to transport the minors from Merida International Airport to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced the sentence Wednesday.

The case began when National Guard officers detained the woman at the airport and turned her over to federal authorities. She had presented fraudulent birth certificates during immigration checks, claiming the Guatemalan children were her own.

Investigators from the Federal Ministerial Police gathered testimony from National Migration Institute personnel and examined the documents presented by the woman. They determined she intended to evade immigration controls and planned to receive payment for transporting the children.

Based on this evidence, a specialized criminal court judge imposed the 12-year prison sentence along with a fine equivalent to 7,500 days’ wages to be paid as general reparations for damages.
