Tulum, Quintana Roo — A woman has reported the theft of her jewelry and subsequent difficulties recovering the items after they were found at a pawn shop in this coastal town.

Roxana Ramos said she was robbed of several pieces of jewelry from her home, and the items later turned up at a Banco Azteca pawn shop in Tulum. She identified the suspected thief as Fabián Farbowickz Cohen, a Uruguayan acquaintance, who allegedly stole various chains and rings and then pawned them at the bank branch.

After noticing her belongings were missing, Ramos began searching for the jewelry, which led her to the pawn shop. She said the shop accepted the items using only a passport as identification.

Ramos confronted the suspect, who reportedly admitted taking the jewelry due to financial problems and promised to cover their value, but never followed through, according to her account.

The victim and her family gathered the money needed to reclaim the pawned items, but when they went to the establishment, staff told them they could not release the jewelry due to inconsistencies in the signature used during the pawn transaction.

The pawn shop said the person who pawned the items would need to be present to retrieve them, a situation that has not yet occurred.

Ramos has filed a complaint with the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the incident and determine responsibilities.

The case has drawn attention from those close to the victim, who have raised concerns about pawn shop verification protocols to prevent allegedly stolen items from being traded or held without owners being able to recover them.
