Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A woman died Wednesday evening in an apparent drowning incident near Playa San Martín on the eastern side of Cozumel. Authorities confirmed the victim, believed to be a resident of the island, was found lifeless along the shore. A man who reportedly attempted to rescue her was hospitalized for medical evaluation.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. when emergency services received a 911 call reporting a person in distress in the water. Municipal police and Civil Protection personnel responded to the scene, where they confirmed the woman’s death. Her identity has not yet been released.
Alfredo Arellano Villaseñor, Director of Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Lifeguards, stated that a man who allegedly tried to assist the victim was treated by paramedics before being transported to General Hospital for further assessment. His current condition remains undisclosed.
Authorities cordoned off the area as the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) conducted an on-site investigation, collected evidence, and removed the body for transfer to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) for legal procedures.
Victim Not a Tourist, Investigation Ongoing
Preliminary reports indicate the deceased was not a tourist but likely a local resident. Investigators are working to confirm her identity and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the drowning.
