Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A local woman has publicly accused officers of the Cozumel Municipal Police of physical assault, unjustified detention, and theft following a minor traffic incident. The victim, identified as Matilde, claims she was violently beaten in the face and robbed after losing control of her motorcycle.
Incident Details
According to Matilde’s account, the incident occurred last Saturday when she was en route to a pharmacy. She lost control of her motorcycle and skidded onto the pavement. Emergency medical personnel arrived and determined she had no serious injuries, allowing her to prepare to leave the scene.
However, a municipal police patrol arrived shortly afterward. Matilde alleges that instead of offering assistance, the officers detained her without explanation. She claims she was violently handcuffed and that a female officer struck her in the face with a helmet and fists during transport to the station. Additionally, she asserts that her personal belongings were confiscated and she was held incommunicado for several hours.
“I was brutally beaten in the face and robbed. They left me isolated without telling me why I was detained. The injuries on my face aren’t from the accident—they’re from the blows a female officer gave me,” Matilde stated. Medical examinations later confirmed that her injuries were consistent with physical assault, not a motorcycle fall.
Calls for Investigation
Matilde has demanded justice and called for authorities to investigate the conduct of the officers involved. She plans to file a formal complaint with the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the Quintana Roo Human Rights Commission (Cdhqroo).
The Directorate of Public Safety issued a statement acknowledging the allegations and confirming that an investigation is underway. A disciplinary process has been initiated against a female officer assigned to the department, identified only by the initials A.A.R., in connection with the incident.
Ongoing Scrutiny of Police Conduct
This case adds to growing concerns over alleged police misconduct in Quintana Roo. Similar incidents, including accusations of extortion and excessive force, have been reported in Tulum and other municipalities, prompting calls for systemic reforms.
Authorities have yet to release further details on the status of the investigation or potential disciplinary actions.
