WhatsApp’s New Scanner: Hidden Dangers

Mexico — WhatsApp has launched a new function that allows users to scan documents directly from the application, facilitating digitalization without the need for external apps. However, this tool has generated both enthusiasm and concern among digital security experts, who warn of the risks associated with sharing sensitive personal information.

Documents Requiring Extreme Caution

The scanner does not limit the types of files users can digitize, making it essential to identify which documents represent the highest risk:

  • Personal documents: Files such as voter ID cards (INE), birth certificates, CURP, RFC, passports, or military service cards are vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.
  • Banking documents: Bank statements, payment receipts, and cards can be intercepted, facilitating unauthorized transfers or purchases.
  • Legal or labor documents: Contracts, lawsuits, or court reports may contain delicate information about third parties and confidential processes.
  • Academic and medical documents: Report cards, certificates, scholarship confirmations, or medical documents can be used for extortion or identity theft.

Security Risks Associated with the Function

Despite WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption, cybercriminals can exploit vulnerabilities. According to the CCSPJ, during 2024, cases of hacking and information theft from WhatsApp accounts in Mexico increased by 672%.

Among the principal risks highlighted are:

  • Identity theft, using documents to carry out illegal procedures.
  • Digital fraud, through intercepted banking information.
  • Fake procedures, where scammers request documents under deceptive pretexts.
  • Threats or extortion using personal information obtained from documents.

To minimize risks, experts suggest:

  • Sending files only to trusted contacts.
  • Activating temporary messages to automatically delete documents.
  • Deleting documents after they are sent.
  • Keeping secure copies in encrypted storage or a personal email account.
  • Avoiding storing sensitive files in the phone's gallery.
  • Keeping the application updated and reviewing granted permissions.

Balance Between Utility and Security

The document scanning function can streamline procedures and make sharing information practical, but its use must be responsible. Limiting digitalization to non-sensitive files and adopting security measures protects users from fraud, identity theft, and cyberattacks.

WhatsApp offers convenience, but the associated risks highlight the importance of digital education, active vigilance, and prevention in the era of instant messaging.
