Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities shut down traffic at one of Puerto Morelos’ main intersections after a potable water line ruptured and cracked the pavement beneath it, the city government said.
The break occurred at the corner of Avenida Joaquín Zetina Gasca and Calle Delfín, where water was seen bubbling up through the asphalt. Officials closed the roadway to vehicles and pedestrians while crews from the water utility Aguakan worked to pinpoint the exact location of the rupture and begin repairs.
Pavement gave way after leak detected
Leonel Salazar Trejo, the municipality’s secretary of public services, said workers first noticed water rising from the pavement. A follow-up inspection confirmed a leak in the potable water network that had caused part of the asphalt surface to sink.
Salazar Trejo said the priority is protecting residents, and that the perimeter remains cordoned off while the utility carries out the repairs. He added that officials detected unusually high water consumption in the area, which could affect supply to nearby households.
Public works secretary Mario Salinas Castro said heavy rains in recent days may have saturated the subsoil and softened the ground, possibly causing the pipe to give way.
He said the affected line is between four and six inches in diameter and supplies the Villas Morelos and Villas La Playa neighborhoods. Crews will have to excavate to determine the precise point of the break and establish what caused it.
Civil protection cordons off the area
Civil protection director Antonio Domínguez Olán coordinated the cordon around the site to keep vehicles out and secure the area during the work.
Aguakan crews began operations to locate the rupture and determine whether the damaged section must be replaced or can simply be repaired.
City officials urged residents to obey signage, stay clear of the work zone and use alternate routes, and asked for patience while the repairs are completed. The duration of the work will depend on how quickly the break is located and fixed.
