President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has urged Aguakan, a water service company, to relinquish its water concession to the Quintana Roo government. She alleges that the company has been involved in numerous abuses. "We stand with the people of Quintana Roo and the governor in their demand for the concession to be handed over. Water should not be viewed as a business. Water is a human right," she declared.
When questioned about the actions of Mara Lezama's government regarding Aguakan, which provides water services to Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, and Puerto Morelos, the President stated that Aguakan has failed to guarantee the right to access water. "In Cancún, the company's actions have been abusive. They have not only failed to uphold the human right to water, but they also set their own rates," she added.
President Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that water should not be commercialized as it is a fundamental right. People pay for water to be transported from one location to another. "Privatizing it for the profit of a private entity, under the guise of better operation, has proven ineffective and illogical, especially in this case. Therefore, the litigation should continue and the most appropriate action for the company would be to relinquish the concession," she reiterated.
