Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Walmart has removed parking toll gates at its store in central Playa del Carmen, ending a nearly three-year dispute with local authorities over unauthorized parking fees.

The retail chain took down the access gates and ticket-issuing structures over the weekend at its location on Avenida 30 and Calle 8 Norte. The gates were intended to charge customers for parking.

The conflict began in August 2023 when the municipal government, then led by Mayor Lili Campos Miranda, shut down the installation because Walmart lacked the necessary permits and authorization to implement parking charges.

In February, authorities placed new closure seals on the infrastructure. Hernán González de los Santos, the Secretary of Territorial Planning, explained at the time that this was merely a replacement of worn-out seals and reiterated that such charges would not be permitted.

A similar attempt occurred at a Chedraui store on Calle 3 Sur, where the company also tried to install toll gates, but municipal authorities shut down that project as well.
