Viral Video Shows Puerto Cancún Security Guard Accused of Harassing Beachgoer

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A viral video has sparked criticism against the Puerto Cancún complex after private security personnel were recorded harassing, intimidating, and questioning a citizen on a beach, in an incident also flagged as potential discrimination based on appearance or social status.

The footage, posted by the account Cancún2.0, shows a security guard in a vehicle from the development approaching the citizen and persistently questioning him about what he was doing there.

During the exchange, the guard repeatedly asks, “What are you looking for?” to which the citizen responds that he doesn’t have to explain his presence since it’s a public space.

“Isn’t this public?” the man questions.

“Yes, of course, it’s public, but it’s also private,” the guard replies contradictorily, attempting to justify his intervention by noting there are private areas within the complex.

The situation grows more tense when the security officer states that the citizen “looks suspicious,” which angers the man recording the video.

“And? Does anyone who comes in look suspicious?” he responds.

Allegations of Discriminatory Treatment

The video’s author maintains that security personnel insinuated he seemed “suspicious,” which social media users have interpreted as a potential act of classism or discrimination—a frequent criticism of high-end real estate developments in tourist destinations.

In the dialogue, the guard also implies, “If you were someone important, you wouldn’t have shoes with dirt…” a comment that reinforced criticism about differential treatment toward those who don’t appear to be residents or visitors of the complex.

During the video, the citizen argues that the guard has no authority to interrogate people in a public space.

“You have no reason to ask people what they’re doing here… this is a form of intimidation,” he is heard saying.

Legal experts note that private security personnel lack the authority to demand explanations or interrogate citizens in public spaces, as those powers belong solely to legally authorized officials.

The incident revives a recurring public discussion in tourist destinations like Cancún. In Mexico, all beaches are national assets with public access, according to the Constitution and the General Law of National Assets, meaning no tourist or residential development can block access to the coastline.

The case also rekindles previous controversies related to access and control of space at Puerto Cancún. Several years ago, the main road through the complex’s commercial area—used by drivers traveling from the hotel zone to the north of the city as a shortcut—was closed to general traffic.

The move prompted criticism and boycott threats from citizens, after which the company eventually allowed vehicular passage again. However, it did so under strict conditions: installing gates, license plate readers, and various control sensors.

Currently, that road remains open only during the commercial zone’s operating hours. Once stores close, the gates shut and only residents of the complex or guests at hotels within the development can enter.

Puerto Cancún has also had recurring conflicts with neighbors from the Lombardo Toledano subdivision, who have reported that the development raised its foundation level during construction, causing rainwater to flow toward that neighborhood.

According to residents, this has led to recurrent flooding in streets and homes, a problem neighbors have highlighted on multiple occasions.

Social Media Debate

After the video circulated, social media users questioned the security personnel’s attitude and noted that this type of incident reflects a culture of exclusion and social control in spaces associated with luxury real estate developments.

So far, Puerto Cancún’s administration has not issued a public statement on what occurred.

The incident again places a sensitive topic in Cancún’s public debate: the clash between exclusive real estate developments and citizens’ right to freely move through public spaces, including Mexican beaches.
