Tulum, Quintana Roo — Violence once again shook the municipality late Friday night with the 22nd execution recorded so far this year. A man was shot to death in the Maya Pax neighborhood, while another young victim sustained critical injuries in a direct attack by an armed assailant who fled the scene.
Fatal Shooting in Maya Pax
The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Ki’is Street, between Satélite and Centauro Norte. Witnesses reported multiple gunshots, and upon arrival, paramedics confirmed one victim showed no vital signs after sustaining at least 10 gunshot wounds. The body remained on the public roadway.
A second victim, an 18-year-old male, was transported alive but in critical condition. However, the situation worsened when the ambulance arrived at Tulum’s Hospital del Bienestar, where medical staff refused to admit him, closing the facility’s doors without explanation. Forced to seek alternative care, paramedics rushed the injured teen to a hospital in Playa del Carmen in a desperate attempt to save his life.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Municipal police officers, part of the “Blindaje Tulum” operation, alongside state police agents, cordoned off the crime scene. Forensic experts and officials from the State Attorney General’s Office later took over the investigation. No arrests have been made, and the identities of the victims remain undisclosed.
This attack adds to a surge in violence plaguing the municipality, marking the 22nd execution in 2025 alone—a troubling trend that has alarmed authorities and residents alike.
Outcry Over Denied Medical Care
The refusal of treatment at Hospital del Bienestar has sparked outrage, particularly given the critical nature of the victim’s injuries. The incident may prompt an investigation into medical negligence, though the hospital has yet to issue an official statement.
The escalating violence and systemic failures in emergency care have intensified calls for accountability and improved public safety measures in the region.
