Veracruz, Veracruz — A long-awaited project to bring cruise ships to the historic Port of Veracruz has entered a new phase, with technical studies now underway to determine if the port’s existing infrastructure can be adapted for modern cruise terminals.
The studies, led by port terminal company SSA Marine México, began in March and focus on analyzing soil mechanics to evaluate the strength of the marine subsoil. This phase will determine whether the old docks can be rehabilitated to receive cruise ships and under what technical conditions.
SSA Marine México, headed in Mexico by Manuel Fernández, is conducting the studies in coordination with the National Port System Administration (Asipona), which manages the Port of Veracruz. Both parties confirmed that the geotechnical evaluations, which include fieldwork using the vessel “Pato Buzo,” will continue through early May.
The project builds on SSA Marine México’s profile as a developer of major projects. The company is part of the global SSA Marine network, a port operator within the Carrix group with a presence in the Americas, Asia, and Africa, and involvement in container, cargo, and cruise terminals.
Experience in Cruise Operations
In Mexico, SSA Marine operates terminals in the Caribbean, including Progreso and Cozumel, which are integrated into the international itineraries of major cruise lines. This presence has allowed the company to establish relationships with shipping companies that structure regional and hemispheric routes, helping define infrastructure and service requirements.
The cruise market organizes around itineraries that connect multiple destinations, typically designed from home ports like Miami. In this scheme, the incorporation of new ports depends on their technical viability and alignment with commercial conditions.
SSA Marine México’s involvement in this phase introduces a component of certainty and expertise into a project long awaited in the so-called “four times heroic” port. The current studies represent the first step in translating a recurring proposal into a technically grounded development.
Long-Awaited Project
The intervention focuses on the port’s tourist pier, implying a process of adapting existing infrastructure. This approach concentrates the analysis on factors like subsoil quality and structural reinforcement requirements.
For the port authority, the project fits into a scheme where private capital drives new business lines within the port complex. For SSA Marine México, it represents a potential expansion of its participation in the country’s cruise segment.
Progress to later stages will depend on the results of the ongoing studies. After years of attempts, the project has entered a phase where its viability is beginning to be measured based on technical and market conditions.
