Valladolid, Yucatán — The book Valladolid, Capital Gastronómica de Yucatán (Valladolid, Gastronomic Capital of Yucatán), published by Larousse and produced by the Valladolid Restaurant Association (ARVAY A.C.), has been selected as one of the six best books in the world in the Food Tourism category of the prestigious Gourmand Awards.
A Global Culinary Honor
The Gourmand Awards, often referred to as the "Oscars" of gastronomy, have recognized outstanding culinary publications since 1995. This year’s competition featured participants from 80 countries, with Valladolid’s book standing alongside finalists from Germany, Oman, Portugal, South Africa, and the United States.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 19, 2025, at the Estoril Congress Center, located between the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais in Portugal’s Riviera. The event is part of the World Food Summit, one of the year’s most significant gastronomic gatherings. The program begins on June 17 with a welcome dinner at Lisbon’s La Panamericana by Chakall restaurant.
Over five days, the Estoril Congress Center will host cooking demonstrations, conferences, book presentations, tastings, and a major culinary and editorial exhibition. The venue is designed to accommodate ceremonies, networking, gastronomic showcases, and cultural activities.
Voices Behind the Project
Chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, the book’s coordinator and a globally recognized ambassador of Mexican cuisine, emphasized the significance of the nomination. "Bringing Valladolid’s cuisine to a global platform is not just an honor—it’s a responsibility," he said. "Gastronomy is our voice to the world, and today Valladolid speaks loud and clear."
The book’s visual appeal played a crucial role in captivating the international jury. Ignacio Urquiza, one of Mexico’s foremost food photographers, remarked, "Every image tells a story, and Valladolid’s stories are of tradition, passion, and beauty. It’s a privilege for the world to see, through my lens, the essence of this extraordinary land."
Jordy Abraham Martínez, founder of ARVAY and the editorial project’s leader, highlighted the broader impact: "This achievement represents an extraordinary opportunity to showcase Valladolid’s richness to the world. When we work with vision and commitment, we build bridges that connect cultures, open doors, and leave a lasting mark. This book isn’t just a publication—it’s a powerful tool to put Valladolid in the global spotlight and project everything it represents."
Civic Pride and Future Prospects
Valladolid Mayor Homero Novelo Burgos underscored the city’s pride in the accomplishment. "Valladolid is a source of pride for Yucatán and Mexico," he said. "This international achievement strengthens our image as a top-tier tourist and cultural destination. I congratulate everyone who made this project possible, showcasing the greatness of our people, land, and cuisine. Rest assured, the municipal government will continue promoting Valladolid in every possible forum so more people discover its richness and charm."
The book has already been presented at prominent venues, including Mexico City’s Soumaya Museum, as well as in Valladolid, Mérida, and the United States. This nomination not only celebrates past efforts but also positions Valladolid as a premier culinary and tourist destination, reinforcing its status among Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns).
