PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX — A pair of American tourists sustained serious injuries on Monday night after the rental vehicle they were in crashed into a ceiba tree on the side of the federal highway near the entrance to the Xcaret park.

According to witnesses, the driver lost control of the car, which veered off the asphalt and was propelled into the ditch, colliding head-on with a young tree whose structure gave way due to the force of the impact. The accident left both occupants trapped within the vehicle's wreckage.

Bystanders in the area immediately came to their aid, while volunteer paramedics from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río union arrived at the scene to provide initial medical attention. The driver was reported to have a head wound, and the woman had multiple contusions, though both individuals remained conscious.

Minutes later, members of the Fire Department and a Red Cross ambulance arrived. They performed rescue maneuvers to extricate the couple. Once stabilized, the tourists were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

According to initial reports, the injuries were not life-threatening, despite the magnitude of the impact.
