United States — U.S. authorities are on alert over intelligence reports analyzing a potential alliance between Mexican cartels and Iran to conduct drone attacks against targets in California. Security agencies are investigating the role of criminal organizations in logistics and the use of this technology along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Intelligence Points to Dual Threat Vectors

The activity of criminal organizations along the U.S.-Mexico border features in security reports linked to alleged Iranian threats of potential attacks against California. Authorities are analyzing intelligence information that connects the presence of Mexican cartels to possible Iranian plans to launch drone strikes.

The analysis comes amid heightened surveillance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology by U.S. security agencies. Reports suggest these devices could use maritime routes or locations near Mexico's northern border for operations targeting U.S. territory.

According to reports by ABC News, the FBI has sent alerts to law enforcement agencies in California regarding the possibility of surprise drone attacks. The alerts are being distributed to local agencies to increase surveillance along the West Coast.

The documents indicate that the drones could take off from vessels located off the Pacific coast. Authorities are also monitoring the land border with Mexico in case the technology is deployed from various points near the dividing line.

Former Official Details Potential Routes and Networks

Former security official John Cohen, who headed intelligence operations at the Department of Homeland Security, explained that the analysis considers more than one possible attack route. In statements quoted by ABC News, he indicated that drone operations could originate from the ocean or from territory near the Mexican border.

Cohen indicated that Iran maintains networks of contacts in various Latin American countries, including Mexico. According to his analysis, these connections could facilitate logistical support or the movement of drone-related equipment should tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate.

Security agencies are also reviewing reports on the prior deployment of attack technology. The hypothesis is that drones or related components could remain stored on ships or land-based locations near the border for potential activation.

U.S. agencies are monitoring maritime movements, equipment transport, and the presence of unmanned technology in areas near California and northern Mexico.

Cartels' Drone Capabilities Under Scrutiny

Intelligence reports include the role of criminal organizations in Mexico within their security analyses. Documents cited by ABC News indicate that U.S. agencies are registering an increase in the use of drones by cartels in operations related to surveillance, cargo transport, and attacks in territorial disputes.

An intelligence bulletin released in September 2025 mentions reports of drones carrying explosives being used in areas near the border. Security agencies are investigating the information and reviewing potential security implications for U.S. territory.

The investigation of these cases also considers the possibility that criminal groups operate as logistical intermediaries in the transport or use of unmanned aerial technology. Authorities are analyzing any potential links between criminal networks and international actors interested in these capabilities.

California Authorities Bolster Defenses

In response to intelligence reports, the California government is coordinating with federal agencies to assess the situation. Governor Gavin Newsom reported that state authorities are reviewing security protocols in anticipation of potential drone-related incidents.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has increased patrols and surveillance at public facilities, cultural centers, and places of worship within its jurisdiction. The measures include additional monitoring and a greater police presence at locations considered sensitive.

While intelligence assessments continue, federal and state authorities are maintaining coordination to respond to any event related to unmanned aircraft or threats involving operations from the Pacific or the border with Mexico.
