Tulum residents protest police detention of fruit stand worker

Intersection in Tulum's '5 calles' area where police detention occurred

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Residents of the area known as “5 calles” expressed their discontent following an incident at the intersection of Okot and Kukulkán avenues, where state police officers allegedly aggressively detained an employee of a local fruit stand.

According to witnesses, the worker was sitting in front of his business, taking a break after finishing his shift, when several officers arrived and subdued him without prior dialogue. The community maintains that the situation did not warrant the use of force and that, at most, it would have only required a warning.

Neighbors also claimed that the police attempted to move a motorcycle that was parked at the site, an action they interpreted as a possible attempt at pressure or extortion. Additionally, they pointed out that the detainee was not allowed to secure his personal belongings before being placed in the patrol car.

The residents requested that the relevant authorities review the conduct of the officers involved and ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
