Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Irregular operations at the Port Captaincy in Isla Mujeres are harming the nautical sector, according to business leaders who warn that unpredictable decisions are reducing tourism activity during the peak season.
Ricardo Muleiro López, director of Asociados Náuticos de Quintana Roo, said the lack of certainty complicates operations in one of the most important destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. He cited constant changes in port opening and closing hours, along with limited communication from authorities, as creating uncertainty among tourism service providers.
So far this year, the port has been closed for approximately 30 days, directly impacting tours and transfers to the island, according to the sector. Muleiro López noted that around 70% of recreational activities departing from Cancún head to Isla Mujeres, meaning any restrictions immediately affect the local economy.
The situation worsens when notices change suddenly, such as during a high-demand day in Holy Week when authorities allowed operations but then ordered the closure of small vessels shortly after. The sector, which was operating at about 70% capacity, could see activity drop by up to 40% due to such decisions, impacting both income and employment.
While acknowledging that maritime authorities must prioritize safety, Muleiro López urged clearer and more predictable criteria, as well as improved dialogue to prevent further damage to the tourism industry.
