Student Exposes Police Abuse in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Outrage spread among citizens of Playa del Carmen following an alleged abuse of authority by an element of the Seguridad Ciudadana, who intercepted and intimidated a young man for an inspection without any motive to substantiate the action.

Citizens began demanding respect for human rights in the face of police abuses that have recently been occurring and being reported in the city of Playa del Carmen.

According to a preliminary report, the officer demanded to search the young man's backpack and also tried to take his cell phone to prevent being recorded. It is important to mention that the police officer's attitude suggested he was under the influence of some psychotropic substance, as he had difficulty speaking clearly.

Based on testimonies, the victim of this injustice was a teenager on his way to the university when he was intercepted and forcibly searched by the officer, who was operating in unit number 82193. In a video that went viral on social media, the agent's insistence can be heard as he ordered the young man to put away his phone.

Ultimately, the population is living with fear and uncertainty due to similar cases, as the actions of the security elements were overbearing to the point of taking photos of the young man and telling him they knew where he lived. This has alarmed citizens amid high rates of police abuse that have occurred in the city of Playa del Carmen in recent months.
