CHETUMAL, Quintana Roo — Two separate traffic accidents occurred this Friday in Chetumal and Cancún, resulting in several injuries and generating public indignation, particularly in the case in the state capital where the alleged responsible party was protected by naval personnel.
In Chetumal, a motorcyclist was injured after being struck by a gray Volkswagen Attitude, allegedly driven by a woman identified as an active member of the Mexican Navy (Semar). Witnesses stated that the driver was performing high-speed accelerations at the intersection of Insurgentes and Universidad Avenues when she lost control and collided with the motorcyclist, dragging him for several meters.
Far from aiding the injured party, the woman fled the scene and abandoned her vehicle near the local IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) office, subsequently taking refuge inside a Navy battalion facility. Officers from the Transit Police and the State Police arrived to proceed with her detention, but military personnel refused to hand her over. As a result, only the vehicle was impounded and transported to a vehicle compound, where it remains at the disposal of the State Attorney General's Office.
The motorcyclist was transported to a hospital, where his condition is reported as stable.
Meanwhile, in Cancún, another incident was recorded on Lakin Avenue, near the Dunosusa supermarket in the Arcos Paraíso subdivision. Three private vehicles were involved in an accident that left four people injured, including minors.
According to initial reports, the driver of a gray Pontiac allegedly suffered a medical episode that caused her to lose control of the vehicle and cross into the oncoming lane, impacting a Suzuki and a Chevy. One of the vehicles involved ended up crashing into a utility pole.
Municipal police cordoned off the area while paramedics from the Red Cross and Ángeles Verdes provided aid to the injured, who were then transported to a hospital. Traffic accident investigators conducted their assessment to determine liability and ordered the involved vehicles to be towed to the impound lot. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.
Both cases have generated diverse reactions among the public, especially due to the lack of immediate consequences for the alleged responsible party in the Chetumal case. This has reignited debate concerning legal immunity and accountability within military institutions.
