Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities in Cozumel have closed two party venues for allowing underage drinking following citizen complaints about loud music. The crackdown occurred after inspections confirmed the illegal sale of alcohol to minors.
First Venue Shut Down After Noise Complaint
Víctor Cabrera Cabrera, head of the Department of Commercial Verification and Regulation, reported that the first incident took place at kilometer five of the transversal highway. Residents alerted emergency services (911) about a noisy gathering. Upon arrival, inspectors found that attendees were being charged an entry fee of 150 pesos and that several were underage.
Authorities confiscated alcoholic beverages and proceeded to shut down the venue. The event organizer refused to take responsibility when confronted by officials.
Second Venue Closed in Similar Operation
Later, another inspection uncovered a similar violation at a separate location, where minors were also found consuming alcohol. The teenagers were handed over to their parents, and the establishment was closed.
Fines and Ongoing Enforcement
On Tuesday, the owner of one of the venues visited the Municipal Treasury to complete the necessary procedures and pay the imposed fine. According to Cabrera Cabrera, penalties for such violations can reach up to 130,000 pesos, depending on the severity of the case.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to continued operations aimed at preventing underage alcohol sales and consumption, as well as penalizing businesses that violate regulations.
