Emergency responders at the scene of a head-on collision between a white Nissan pickup and a concrete mixer truck near the Maya Train station in Cancun.

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A head-on collision on the Mérida-Cancun highway near the Maya Train station left two men dead and caused significant damage on Monday evening.

According to initial reports, the crash occurred when the driver of a white Nissan pickup truck, traveling from Puerto Morelos toward Huayacán Avenue, attempted to pass another vehicle at kilometer 307 and crossed into the oncoming lane.

The pickup collided head-on with a concrete mixer truck whose operator tried unsuccessfully to avoid the impact. Both vehicles left the roadway, with the heavy mixer truck overturning onto its right side in a grassy area.

Witnesses alerted emergency services, mobilizing Red Cross paramedics, firefighters, and National Guard highway patrol officers. Responders confirmed that the two occupants of the pickup had died, trapped in the wreckage.

The concrete truck driver sustained multiple injuries and was taken to a hospital under guard pending an investigation.

Federal authorities cordoned off the area while the State Prosecutor’s Office, forensic experts, and ministerial agents conducted procedures and recovered the bodies with assistance from firefighters.

The deceased were transported to the Forensic Medical Service as unidentified, awaiting family members for official identification.
