Playa del Carmen Extortion Duo Formally Charged

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo, through the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in Combating Kidnapping and Extortion, has secured a judge's order to formally charge two men identified as Roger Alberto "N" and Inocente "N" for their alleged involvement in acts constituting the crime of extortion against two victims, whose identities are reserved.

The events under investigation occurred on October 1 of this year, when the accused arrived at two commercial establishments located on Xel-Há Avenue in the Guadalupana neighborhood of this municipality. At the location, Roger Alberto "N" and Inocente "N" demanded the victims pay a monthly fee of 15,000 pesos for so-called "protection" and threatened them with death if they did not comply with the demand.

As a result of the threats, the victims handed over 1,500 pesos to the accused. Following the handover of the cash, the extortionists departed, at which point one of the affected individuals immediately reported the incident to the 911 emergency number.

The prompt response from Municipal Police officers led to the arrest of both men in the act.

Once the complaint was filed with the Specialized Prosecutor's Office, the respective investigation file was integrated and judicialized. During a hearing, the prosecution presented its evidence, which allowed the Control Judge to order the two men to stand trial.

Additionally, the judicial authority imposed the precautionary measure of mandatory pretrial detention for a term of two years.
