Cancun, Mexico — Two consecutive crashes in Cancun’s hotel zone caused major traffic delays during Thursday afternoon rush hour, with three vehicles ending up on the central median and tow trucks blocking lanes for hours.
The first collision occurred around 1:20 p.m. on kilometer 6 of the hotel zone boulevard when a red Renault KWID driver attempted to change lanes without noticing a blue Chevrolet Onix traveling in the adjacent lane. The Renault sustained severe damage to its left front side from the impact and spun sideways, blocking the right lane. The Chevrolet driver lost control and came to a stop on the central median.
No injuries were reported in the initial crash, but traffic slowed significantly as the damaged vehicles blocked lanes.
Minutes later, a dairy delivery truck approaching the scene could not stop in time due to the obstructed roadway. The driver swerved, struck the curb, and ended up on the central median alongside the other vehicles.
The three-vehicle pileup created extensive traffic backups that worsened when tow trucks arrived to clear the wreckage. Traffic flow was completely halted at times, creating long queues of vehicles during the peak afternoon period when hundreds of hotel workers were commuting to their shifts.
Normal traffic conditions resumed more than three hours after the initial crash.
