Tulum, Mexico — Violence has escalated once again in this tourist destination after two armed attacks occurred in less than 24 hours, leaving one person dead and three others seriously injured in different parts of the municipality.
First Attack in Ya’ax Tulum Neighborhood
The first incident took place yesterday afternoon in the Ya’ax Tulum neighborhood, north of the city, when armed individuals opened fire on three men standing in front of a house on Jazmín Street, between Margaritas and 20 Norte Avenue. Witnesses reported that the attack was direct and unprovoked.
One of the men died at the scene, while the other two were treated by paramedics and initially transported to Tulum General Hospital. Due to the severity of their injuries—one victim sustained at least three gunshot wounds, two in the abdomen and one in the right arm, as well as a facial injury—both were urgently transferred to Playa del Carmen General Hospital.
Authorities, including municipal police, the National Guard, and personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office, cordoned off the area and began investigative procedures. The number of assailants and the vehicle used in their escape remain unidentified.
Second Attack at Muuk Tulum Hotel
Hours later, a second armed attack was reported inside the Muuk Tulum hotel, located in Region 15 at the intersection of Chechén Avenue and 8 Sur Street. The victim, a Cuban national and alleged drug dealer, was shot inside his room.
Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers knocked on the door and, upon being let in, fired at least four shots at the foreigner, leaving him critically wounded. Paramedics from the Salud y Vida ambulance transported him to IMSS Bienestar Tulum Hospital before he was transferred to Playa del Carmen General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Investigations Underway
Both cases are under investigation by ministerial authorities, who have not ruled out possible links to organized crime. The recurrence of armed attacks in such a short span has heightened concerns among residents and visitors, as Tulum continues to grapple with drug-related violence and territorial disputes among criminal groups.
