Tulum, Quintana Roo — Residents of Tulum have launched a citizen petition calling for the municipality to be reclassified from electricity tariff 1B to 1C under the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), arguing that current climate and consumption patterns justify the change, which would lower power bills for thousands of families.
The initiative, promoted by citizen Alex Monroy through the Change.org platform, notes that Tulum is one of the municipalities in Quintana Roo where households pay some of the highest domestic electricity rates in the state, while other localities already benefit from the 1C tariff, which includes a larger government subsidy and lower costs for energy consumption.
According to the petition, Tulum meets the necessary conditions to qualify for this reclassification. However, the process requires the Tulum City Council and the Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) to submit a formal request to the CFE for evaluation and potential approval.
Proponents argue that a tariff change would provide economic relief for Tulum families by reducing the amount of their electricity bills, while also strengthening the local economy by freeing up resources that could be used for other essential household expenses. They also emphasize that the benefit would be especially important during periods of high temperatures, when the use of cooling appliances and electricity consumption increase.
Through the digital platform, citizens are inviting the public to support the initiative by collecting signatures, with the goal of urging municipal authorities and CAPA to begin the necessary procedures with the CFE. Campaign organizers say citizen participation will be key to achieving what they consider a fair and necessary change for the municipality.
