Tulum, Quintana Roo — A police officer with the Tulum Public Security and Citizen Protection Department has been fired after allegedly losing his service weapon and a magazine while on assignment in the coastal community of Punta Allen. Authorities also suspect the officer may have been under the influence of alcohol during the incident.
According to preliminary reports, the officer notified his superiors that he had been threatened by members of an organized crime group, prompting an immediate alert within the department due to the risk to the officer’s safety and the possibility that the official weapon had fallen into the wrong hands. A tactical team was deployed to Punta Allen to investigate and locate the officer.
The report was received around 2:30 a.m., and specialized personnel arrived at the detachment between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. They found the officer allegedly lying down and appearing intoxicated. Another officer assigned to the same duty was cleaning the facilities at the time.
During inspection, commanders confirmed that the officer’s service weapon and a magazine were not in his possession. No evidence was found to support his claim of being threatened by organized crime, nor were there any empty cans or bottles indicating alcohol consumption inside the guard post. Investigators preliminarily believe the officer may have left the detachment to drink alcohol and later returned.
Given the seriousness of the incident, the Tulum Public Security Department decided to dismiss the officer, stating that the loss of an official weapon poses a risk to public safety and constitutes a serious violation of police disciplinary rules, regardless of any administrative or criminal liabilities that may arise.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the weapon and magazine have been recovered, nor whether the case has been referred to the State Prosecutor’s Office for investigation. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the weapon remain unclear, and further inquiries are expected to determine exactly what happened and assign responsibility.
