Cancun’s Malecón Tajamar Revival and Hotel Zone Renovation Plan Aim to Boost Investment and Jobs

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The revival of Malecón Tajamar and a comprehensive renovation plan for Cancun’s Hotel Zone are set to usher in a new phase of urban and tourism development, aiming to attract investment, reclaim abandoned properties, and generate new jobs.

Miguel Lemus Mateos, president of the Quintana Roo Association of Real Estate Developers (ADIROO), announced the initiatives, saying they are designed to boost the destination’s competitiveness by recovering strategic spaces that have fallen into disuse.

Lemus Mateos highlighted Malecón Tajamar’s potential as a major economic driver. The new development plan will use only 30 to 40 percent of the density originally envisioned, in order to respect the area’s environmental conditions.

A special commission has been formed with the state’s Cabinet of Public Policies and Emblematic Projects, which is already holding working meetings with the federal government to define the project’s future. “Everything points to a major transformation by 2027,” Lemus Mateos said.

In parallel, authorities are working on a strategy to eliminate so-called “black spots” in the Hotel Zone — abandoned lots and buildings that mar the image of the Mexican Caribbean’s top tourist destination.

A first meeting with the municipal Urban Council has already taken place, where it was agreed to set up working groups to analyze each case and define recovery actions. Among the properties slated for modernization are Plaza Flamingos and Plaza Caracol, whose owners are already developing renovation plans to be presented in the coming months.

The goal is to upgrade the infrastructure and appearance of these spaces, improving the experience for visitors and residents while strengthening Cancun’s commercial and tourism offerings.
