Germán Gallegos Cruz, a well-known restaurant entrepreneur from Tulum, has passed away due to the effects of COVID-19.
TULUM – German Gallegos Cruz, affectionately known as “Don Cafeto” for his restaurant bearing the same name, passed away on the morning of this Saturday, August 14, 2021 at his home in Tulum. The businessman and restaurateur lost the battle against COVID-19. He was 68 years old.
“Family and friends: We know the great affection they have always shown to Don Germán Gallegos “Don Cafeto “. For this reason, we inform you that he will be waked from 3:00 in the morning at his home, in Don Cafeto Cimarrón for those who like to join us. We warmly appreciate all the expressions of affection for Don Germán Gallegos Cruz. NOTE: all pertinent sanitary measures will be taken ”, it was announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
Originally from the state of Guerrero, he arrived in Quintana Roo many years ago and witnessed the growth and touristic development of Tulum, even before it became the ninth municipality of Quintana Roo.
His restaurant became a meeting point for politicians, as well as national and international artists. A friend and colleague of journalists, he founded “La Mesa de las Nauyacas” in his cafeteria , where the affairs of Tulum and its rulers were discussed, as well as political issues of the state were discussed.
In addition to being a restaurant entrepreneur, “Don Cafeto” participated in politics, but walked away after some unclear incidents. He was also known for his activism and altruism.
Friends mourned the death of “Don Cafeto” and posted their condolences to the family on their social networks.
According to the most recent report from the State Secretary of Health (SESA), as of August 13, 3,482 deaths have been registered from COVID-19 in the state of Quintana Roo.
