Tulum Families Gather for Traditional Matán Celebration Tied to Agricultural Cycle

Families participating in the traditional Matán celebration in Tulum, preparing food together

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Dozens of families gathered in Tulum this week for the traditional Matán celebration, a community event tied to the agricultural calendar that features collective food preparation, prayers, and fellowship.

The celebration took place at the home of Víctor Balam, where neighbors and relatives participated in the day-long communal cooking that forms the core of this cultural practice. The Matán symbolizes community unity, abundance, and marks the beginning of the planting season in the region.

Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo attended as a guest, joining families who continue to pass down this tradition through generations.

A Tradition Linked to the Agricultural Cycle

The Matán involves collective food preparation throughout the day at the host family’s home. Once the food is ready, participants say prayers to bless the meal before distributing it among attendees.

Each participant brings containers to take food home, symbolizing abundance and solidarity within the community. According to participants, this tradition is directly related to the region’s agricultural calendar, marking the start of the planting period and expressing hopes for good harvests and sufficient food throughout the year.

Community and Solidarity Among Families

During the celebration, some attendees received containers to help them bring food home, allowing more families to share the meals prepared during the event. This gesture reinforces the spirit of solidarity that characterizes the Matán, where collective participation and sharing are fundamental elements of the tradition.

Officials Highlight Importance of Preserving Traditions

During his participation, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo emphasized the importance of preserving cultural practices that strengthen community identity. He noted that in a constantly growing municipality like Tulum, keeping traditions alive helps maintain community identity.

The mayor also highlighted that these celebrations form part of the local cultural heritage and help reinforce values like community, respect, and solidarity among neighbors.
