Tulum, Quintana Roo — Local officials are developing a tourism strategy to attract visitors arriving for the FIFA World Cup 2026 through Cancún International Airport, aiming to extend their stay in the Mexican Caribbean and enjoy the soccer experience in Tulum.
Carla Andrade Piedras, Tulum’s tourism director, explained that the plan targets tourists coming to Cancún to support their national teams during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, encouraging them to spend more time in the region.
“We’re working on a strategy so tourists arriving at the airport can enjoy their team’s matches and not just pass through, but stay a few extra days to experience the soccer festivities in Tulum,” Andrade Piedras said.
Giant Screens and World Cup Experiences in Tulum
As part of the tourism strategy, the destination will feature special areas for broadcasting World Cup matches, including giant screens for tourists and residents to watch games in a festive atmosphere.
These spaces will also include:
- Dining areas
- Social zones
- Tourism and recreational activations
- Soccer-themed experiences
The goal is to make Tulum a gathering point for fans vacationing in the Mexican Caribbean during the tournament.
Coordination with Quintana Roo Sports Authorities
Planned World Cup 2026 activities in Tulum will be coordinated with the Quintana Roo Commission for Youth and Sports, which will help organize sports and recreational activities.
According to Andrade Piedras, this department will lead proposals related to the event.
“They will be the ones leading the activities and ideas for everything we can organize through this major event,” she explained.
The interagency coordination aims to ensure tournament-related activities proceed in an orderly and attractive manner for visitors.
Tulum Seeks to Leverage World Cup’s International Exposure
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be one of the decade’s most important sporting events, with host cities in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, providing significant international exposure for the country’s tourist destinations.
Although Tulum won’t host official matches, tourism officials consider the event a strategic opportunity to attract visitors already in Mexico.
The plan integrates the soccer atmosphere with the destination’s tourism offerings, which include:
- Mexican Caribbean beaches
- Mayan archaeological sites
- Regional cuisine
- Nature tourism experiences
This approach allows travelers to combine their passion for soccer with tourist activities, extending their stay in the destination.
World Cup 2026 Could Draw Millions of Visitors to Mexico
Nationally, tourism authorities estimate the 2026 FIFA World Cup could bring over 5.5 million additional visitors to Mexico.
They also project an economic impact exceeding 60 billion pesos from accommodation, transportation, dining, and recreational activities.
This scenario creates opportunities for tourist destinations like Tulum, which seek to integrate into the event experience through cultural, sports, and recreational activities aimed at international fans.
