During their initial regular meeting, the Entertainment, Employment, and Social Welfare Commission of Tulum's City Council decided to form four specialized committees to plan the International Festival of Mayan Culture. This project, recently proposed by Jorge Portilla Mánica, the councilor and president of the commission, aims to establish Tulum as a global cultural hub, while enhancing tourism and promoting the image of Quintana Roo worldwide.
The Organizing Committee will consist of experts in culture, art, and tourism. It will also include a Cultural Liaison Committee to coordinate efforts with other municipalities and states, ensuring an authentic representation of the culture. "The wealth of knowledge and diverse aspects that the Mayan civilization has provided us form the fundamental basis of this initiative," stated councilor Portilla Mánica.
The councilors also agreed to form an International Promotion Committee, tasked with developing strategies to attract both national and international tourists. Another committee will be established to foster partnerships with cultural institutions, such as INAH, the Ministry of Culture, and other organizations, to bolster and secure institutional support for the festival.
Councilor Eugenio Barbachano Loza applauded the project's significance, noting that the ancient culture continues to thrive through its cuisine, art, and crafts. He also suggested scheduling the festival to coincide with the Mayan Feast of the Ceremonial Center of Mayan Culture.
