Tulum Businessman Urges Objective Reporting to Protect Destination’s Image

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A local businessman is calling on media outlets to report objectively on Tulum, arguing that exaggerated coverage of crime and economic struggles is damaging the destination’s reputation and discouraging visitors.

Helbert Belmont said that while criminal incidents do occur and should not be downplayed, the daily reality for most residents is far less alarming than some reports suggest. He noted that he regularly goes about his activities with his family without fear of robbery or assault, and urged against generalizations that create a distorted perception of the town.

“I’m not saying there are no cases, because there are, but we are not in a tragedy or at peak violence as is sometimes said. I can walk with my family and my children in Tulum without any problem. What we ask is that the truth be told and that things not be magnified,” Belmont said.

On the economic front, he acknowledged that a drop in tourism has forced some businesses to close, but insisted that most establishments remain open and are weathering the low season. He said portraying Tulum as a “ghost town” does not reflect reality and ultimately hurts those who keep their businesses running and continue to serve visitors.

Belmont added that the destination’s recovery depends not only on addressing its challenges but also on promoting its natural, cultural, and tourist attractions. He argued that balanced coverage, grounded in facts and context, would help strengthen visitor confidence and support the efforts of business owners and workers betting on Tulum’s economic revival.
