Tulum Authorities Shut Down Event Venue in Playa Paraíso Over Noise Complaints and Sea Turtle Nesting Concerns

Playa Paraíso, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities have shut down the Villa La Joya event venue in Playa Paraíso following numerous complaints from residents about large-scale parties and potential environmental damage to a protected sea turtle nesting area.

The closure was carried out by inspectors from the municipal civil protection, urban development, and ecology departments after locals reported frequent large social events, nighttime noise, intensive logistical operations, and possible use of fireworks during private functions at the property.

Officials said the action is part of an administrative review to verify whether the venue complies with permits, licenses, and regulations applicable to establishments in coastal zones with specific environmental restrictions.

Villa La Joya is located in Playa Paraíso, a coastal corridor north of Playa del Carmen where various species of sea turtles come ashore to nest each year during the reproductive season. This ecological status requires monitoring of lighting, noise levels, nighttime traffic, and any activities that could disrupt the natural behavior of protected wildlife.

Municipal authorities stated the intervention aims to prevent damage to the coastal ecosystem and directly address concerns raised by area residents, who had complained that some events caused recurring nighttime disturbances, particularly from loud music and traffic associated with guests and suppliers entering and leaving the venue.

The municipal government said the review falls within its authority for territorial planning and control of economic activities, with the goal of ensuring the venue operates according to current regulations and in a manner compatible with the area’s environmental designation.

Inspectors are examining documentation related to operations, safety measures, temporary event permits, and environmental impact on the immediate surroundings. The venue will remain closed while the administrative case is resolved.

The Playa Paraíso area has been under constant surveillance by environmental and municipal authorities due to its ecological value and the growth of private activities related to weddings, celebrations, and beachfront events—a sector that has expanded significantly along the municipal coastline in recent years.

The municipal government reiterated it will continue responding to citizen reports regarding noise, irregular use of spaces, and potential regulatory violations in residential and coastal areas.
