Mexico City — The Tren Maya recorded one of its most significant passenger surges to date, transporting over 10,000 travelers in just two days during the Holy Week holiday period, officials announced.

The Tourism Ministry reported that on April 2 and 3, the train carried 10,379 passengers. On April 2, there were 5,331 passengers—5,202 Mexican nationals and 129 international visitors. The following day saw 5,048 passengers, with 4,927 Mexicans and 121 foreigners.

This two-day total represents 12.16% of the entire ridership recorded on the Tren Maya during March, which saw 85,324 passengers.

“This flow not only reflects interest in new routes, but also boosts the local economy and strengthens regional connectivity,” the Tourism Ministry stated.

Travelers increasingly choose this transportation option during holiday periods like Holy Week to connect with archaeological sites, regional communities, jungles, and coastal areas.

The four most popular routes during these two days were:

  • Cancún Airport to Mérida Teya
  • Mérida Teya to Cancún Airport
  • Palenque to San Francisco de Campeche
  • Chetumal to Cancún Airport

This activity continues momentum from March, when the Tren Maya transported 85,324 passengers. Since beginning operations, the train has carried 2,342,735 passengers total.

March’s ridership was partly driven by one of the region’s most significant tourist events: El Camino de Kukulkán, for which passengers received a 25% discount to the Chichén Itzá station.

“The Tren Maya is establishing itself as one of Mexico’s major tourism initiatives. Travelers are choosing a different way to discover the southeast,” the Tourism Ministry added.

Ahead of the Holy Week holiday window, train staff received inclusion and masculinity training, more local businesses were connected, tourist packages were presented, and sales points were strengthened with vending machines at strategic locations in Mérida.
