Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Many residents and visitors are unaware that the Tren Maya station in Playa del Carmen offers a bus shuttle to the city center for just 55 pesos, according to station manager Nelson Cabrera Salazar.
The intermodal service runs with each train arrival, taking passengers to the ADO alternate terminal just a few blocks from the beach zone. The shuttle also operates in reverse, departing from the ADO terminal 40 minutes before each train departure at the same fare.
“People who don’t know can come to the alternate terminal, and we’ll bring them here,” Cabrera said.
Currently, the Tren Maya runs six services from Playa del Carmen, but two new frequencies will be added starting August 15. One route departs for Chetumal at 9:51 a.m., stopping in Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Chacchoben, and Bacalar. Another heads to Mérida at 7:10 p.m. The new additions include two extra departures to Cancún at 7:53 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Existing Cancún services leave at 2:22 p.m., 7:10 p.m., and 8:56 p.m.
Cabrera highlighted the comfort of the trains, which feature spacious seating and a car where passengers can buy drinks and food. “It’s a very pleasant trip, very comfortable seats, with a car that sells beverages and food,” he said.
He invited locals and tourists to use the system and explore the connections across Mexico’s southeast. “Travel on the Tren Maya, get to know it, and don’t just believe what others tell you,” he added.
