Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen has introduced Transporte Sin Tanto Choro, a new free public transit service exclusively for high school and university students. The initiative aims to provide safe and reliable transportation to educational institutions across the city.

Routes and Schedules Announced

The service, which began operations on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, will operate three routes with departures from Villas del Sol, Las Américas, and SuperAKI, terminating at key academic hubs including the Universidad de Quintana Roo (UQROO), Universidad Tecnológica (UT), and Tecnológico de Playa del Carmen. Buses will run Monday through Friday from 5:50 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Credential Requirements for Access

To utilize the service, students must obtain a special transit card by submitting the following documents at the Dirección de Transporte Público offices in the Nuevo Palacio Municipal between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. until August 2025:

  • Official ID (INE) or school credential
  • Proof of enrollment
  • Two color passport-sized photographs
  • Emergency contact name and phone number

Background and Government Support

The program follows the announcement by Governor Mara Lezama and aligns with broader state initiatives such as Salud Sin Tanto Choro, designed to improve public services. Currently, the transit service is exclusive to Playa del Carmen, though future expansions remain under consideration.

Authorities encourage eligible students to take advantage of the program, emphasizing its role in reducing transportation barriers for the academic community.
